Daily newborn massage is a great way to bond with your newborn.
Massage may promote better sleeping, relieve colic and enhance your newborn's immune system, motor skills, and intellectual development.
In this article, I will be sharing tips and techniques on how to massage your newborn’s body.
Tips
Use a blanket or towel, and massage oil in a non-breakable container.
Test the oil on a small spot of your newborn's skin and wait a day to be sure no irritation appears.
Start when your newborn is quiet yet awake.
Undress your newborn down to his diaper and place him on the blanket.
Techniques
Head
With your thumbs placed on the center of your newborn’s forehead, stroke gently across his eyebrow lines.
Move the strokes towards the nose line to cheeks and finally towards the ears.
Massage the scalp like you are shampooing it.
Chest
Stroke from the shoulders moving inwards towards the chest several times.
Place your hands on the center of your newborn’s chest and gently rub towards the left and right sides.
Stroke outwards across the chest, almost as if creating a heart shape.
Arms
Make circular strokes on the palms.
Gently stroke the hands, moving towards the tips of the fingers.
Continue stroking the forearms and upper arms in circular motions.
Back
Turn your newborn around and carefully put him on your tummy.
Place your arms on the lower back and make an ‘M’ motion.
Gently rub the side of the upper spine downwards to the buttock.
Tummy
Use the lightest pressure to stroke the belly and below the chest.
Make several gentle strokes in a clockwise circular motion across the abdomen, all the while avoiding the belly button.
Legs
Using your thumb, make circles on your newborn’s heels while moving towards the toes.
Slowly stroke his ankles, moving up the thighs.
I hope all these pointers will help you to massage your newborn’s body.
